Abdominal surgery upper
In some cases the skin on the stomach does not return to its original size after pregnancy or weight loss. This is because the skin has been stretched to an extreme extent, combined with reduced elasticity. At the same time, the abs may have drifted apart and not resumed their original position, which leads to an increased waist-measurement.
This may lead to eczema and other functional difficulties. It may also be difficult to find clothes that fit or participate in sport and other physical activities as the surplus skin may get in the way. Often there are pronounced aesthetic problems associated with loose abdominal skin and an increased waist-measurement. In these cases, abdominal plastic surgery may recreate the patient’s original shape by tightening up the skin and muscles.
Through an incision from the edge of the pubic hair and out towards the hip bone, the skin is loosened from its base, the surplus is removed and the skin is draped back over.
The abs are sewn together and resume their original position leading to a reduction in the waist-measurement.
The operation takes about two hours and is carried out under a general anaesthetic. The patient remains at the clinic overnight. The patient can then return home on the same day. There is an appointment at the consultation room after two weeks for a check-up and the removal of any stitches.
The patient will be off work for four weeks and must, during this period, wear an abdominal belt day and night.
In certain cases, it is possible to combine abdominal plastic surgery with liposuction as long as only the surrounding areas are liposuctioned. Liposuction of the abdomen should therefore be avoided at the same time as abdominal plastic surgery in order to avoid complications, such as fluid accumulation.
