Prosthesis replacement
The most common reason for wanting a prosthesis replacement is the patient wanting to change her breast size, either to a larger or smaller volume. If the first operation was performed via an incision in the armpit, it will be possible to replace the prosthesis via the same incision in the armpit.
If, on the other hand, the previous operation was carried out via an incision under the breast, the same incision under the breast will be used so as to avoid new scars.
Sometimes the reason for exchanging a prosthesis may be that the breasts have become loose and sagging and then the replacement may be combined with a breast lift.
If the breasts have become hard or assumed an unnatural shape, this may be due to the prostheses being put on top of the breast muscles during the previous operation.
Then the prostheses are replaced in a position under the breast muscles to achieve a softer and more natural result. The size may also be changed during the same operation.
The operation is always carried out under a general anaesthetic and the patient stays overnight at the clinic. The dressing is a cut under-wired bra and a band on top of the breasts for up to four weeks to reshape the breasts.
The normal time off work is about two weeks.
