Nose plastic surgery
The central location of the nose in the face means that it contributes a great deal to the character of the face. It also plays an important part in breathing and, therefore, our physical well-being. These combined factors have meant that corrections to the nose have always been one of the plastic surgery operations most in demand.
Most people who are dissatisfied with their nose see it as too big, too wide or crooked. In many cases, an operation may help. However, a careful consultation, during which your expectations are compared with our options for helping you, is important.
Depending on how the nose is to be corrected, two main operation methods are used, open and closed.
In an open operation, which takes a little longer, an incision is made in each nostril and in the skin that connects the nostrils. This method is used in more extensive corrections to the tip of the nose. A closed operation does not leave any visible scars and is used when no major corrections to the tip of the nose are required.
Operations, which take about 2 hours, are carried out under a combination of general and local anaesthetic. In most cases, the patient goes home the same day. After the operation, the nose is taped and, in some cases, a plaster splint is used. At most, the nose is swollen for 1-2 weeks after the operation and there is generally no need to be off work for any great length of time. Sometimes, the end result of the operation is not seen for a long time.
